Full sun is tolerated if constant moisture is provided. Best grown in average, medium, well-drained soils. Smooth Hydrangeas can be grown in full sun or dappled shade (the hotter the climate, the more shade is needed) and are surprisingly drought tolerant.They are excellent substitutes for Mophead Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) in colder climates. Cold-hardy, Smooth Hydrangeas can endure harsh winters and severe cold.Smooth Hydrangeas typically grow up to 3-6 ft.The foliage of broad egg-shaped, sharply toothed, dark green leaves turns butter-yellow shades in fall, extending the season of interest of this magnificent flowering shrub. Blooming profusely from early summer to fall, the distinctly domed to nearly rounded blossoms open lime-green and change to brilliant creamy-white before switching to a tan shade in the fall. I like to cut this font with a 0.01 offset to thicken it up just a little bit, but that is completely optional!
